Why a Business Needs a Website

Did you know that 81% of people who own cell phones, own a smartphone?

Did you know that 52% of web searches come from mobile devices such as smartphones or tablets?

Or how about that 40,000 searches are performed EVERY SECOND on the internet?

With that type of data, it can be understandable as to why a business needs a website. Websites are how businesses, organizations, and professionals communicate who they are, what they do, and why they do it to its audience. It’s one of the first places people go to find more information about a business, organization, or professional portfolios.

Students in school are taught to do research. When they don’t know something or want to know more about a topic, they open their phones and type in their search engines, hoping to receive an answer. Even college students now type up their term papers on their smartphones. Millennials and Digital-Agers are now relying on their smartphones and tablets to do the research they need. Even Alexa and Google search the world wide web when they are asked a question. But how does Alexa or Google know the answers? It is because of professionals that specialize in an industry that the searcher is seeking information about. These professionals put the answers on the world wide web through web pages and blogs. Alexa and Google search through these web pages and report their findings back to the searcher.

For example, I just watched a movie and want to know where I have seen the main actor before. I open my phone, go to Google or Safari, and type the name of the movie. Up pops thousands of results and responses. But, which one do I click on? The average person no longer scrolls past the “top fold” of the web browser. Most clicks come from the top results. This means, if you or your company does not have a website, you will not be shown in these results or any results. Searchers will get their information from someone else, maybe even your competitor.

How about this example: I am traveling to a new area and am looking for somewhere to eat. I open my phone and type in “Restaurants near Lock Haven, PA.” Up pops some results. I’m not interested in pizza today so I scroll past those. I find somewhere that looks delicious and decide to spend my money there. “You’re business was not in my list of potential restaurants,” you say? It was because you do not have a website and/or aren’t search engine optimized.

Hailstorm damage to your roof and are looking for a roofer? The phone comes out again, and another search is performed.

The scenarios are endless. But whatever the scenario, it is important to have at least a basic website for your business in order to be found in search results and for Alexa to stop saying, “No results found.”
