Tips for Practicing Mindfulness as the Seasons Change

A brand new season can present the opportunity for new ideas and big changes. This is especially common as the weather gets warmer. Spring cleaning, summer plans, and making the effort to spend time outside with loved ones can mark a beautiful shift in motivations. But, this can also cause stress to increase as schedules and priorities shift.

5 Tips for Practicing Mindfulness

Spend Time with Nature

Go outside alone, with a friend, a book, or your headphones and observe how the scenery has changed since the dry and barren effects of Winter. Being present in nature has always been an effective method for practicing mindfulness and keeping yourself grounded through stressful situations.

Create Rituals

Rituals and routines, though used interchangeably, are vastly different. A routine involves repeating the same steps or practices daily, and while a ritual can be the same, the intention is what sets it apart. Summer slows down time for almost everyone, whether it’s finishing a semester or your business’s slow season, your day is left with gaps to be filled. Develop a ritual and set your intentions. What do you want to get out of that particular ritual? How do you want to feel afterwards? Get in touch with your desires and watch how an intentional decision can have a positive impact on your well-being.

Mindful Eating

There is no doubt that food is fuel, but cold months keep you wanting quick comfort meals that can be enjoyed wrapped in a cozy blanket on the couch. Summertime provides seasonal foods like fruits and vegetables that will nourish your body. Try starting your own vegetable garden this summer to replenish yourself and nourish your soul with home-grown produce.

Try a New Activity

Warm weather creates opportunities for outdoor activities like hiking, golf, or tennis. Gardening, reading outside, or going to a farmer’s market are also summer activities that can help you connect with your community and environment.

Practice Meditation

Meditation can take many forms. Classic meditation involving sitting in silence, deep breathing, and setting intentions is an effective mindfulness practice, but mediation can be done in any setting and during any activity. Any of the aforementioned tips can be combined with mediation as you are able to do breathwork and intention setting with any activity you enjoy.
